Summary
This position is the second level in the Technical Career Path. Incumbents in this position work as part of a project team to provide architectural, implementation and operational design support for a broad range of architectural and infrastructure technologies. Incumbent has a broad knowledge of one or more of the following areas: Cisco networking solutions, MPLS WANs, virtual private networks, and firewall platforms. Incumbents in this position support planning, development, and implementation of the Company’s operations facilities around these four areas, including local and wide area networks.
General Job Duties
- Participate as part of a project team in designing, developing and implementing architectural and infrastructure technologies for the business.
- Participate in developing guidelines and procedures for LAN/WANs, network services, data storage, architecture and/or desktop environment services and in communicating those to the user community.
- Provide technical support and problem resolution on moderately complex issues in one or more of the following areas: networking, storage, architecture or desktop environment.
- Manage small to medium-sized projects or portions of large projects and assist in resolving issues and planning for new applications and services.
- Identify and recommend opportunities to improve and enhance communication services to internal and external customers.
- Establishes program budget and timelines for small to medium-sized programs or portions of a program; manage assigned segment of program within budget and time constraints.
- Monitor and report to management on program status, identify issues that may impede attainment of goals, recommend and implement corrective measures.
- Provide technical direction and training to more junior Technical Services personnel.
- Perform other duties as required.
Specific Job Duties
- Responsible for configuring and maintaining Cisco network equipment, including but not limited to, routers, layer 2 and layer 3 switches, and wireless access points.
- Configure and troubleshoot wide area network connections across MPLS wide area networking.
- Work with senior LAN/WAN engineers in designing enterprise-class solutions for the future direction of the IHS network.
- Configure and troubleshoot virtual private networks utilizing Cisco, Checkpoint, and Juniper security platforms.
- Maintain and perform changes on CheckPoint firewalls.
- Provide recommendations on workflow and design enhancements to the infrastructure to improve reliability and performance, reduce cost, and anticipate Company growth and acquisitions
- Work closely with the Design and Architecture Team to implement solutions that have been fully designed and tested
- Additional responsibilities will include Level 2 support and monitoring of data networks, including WAN, LAN, and Wireless on a Cisco network.
- Perform moves, adds, changes, deletes on Cisco Call Manager IP telephony platform as needed
Education/Experience Requirements
- Bachelors in Computer Science, related field or equivalent experience.
- 5 + years of experience with Cisco networking equipment
- Thorough understanding of one or more operating environments (LYNX, UNIX, Windows NT, etc.)
- Broad technical knowledge of Cisco network equipment and routing protocols.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills – must be able to work effectively as part of a project/program team and foster team cooperation.
- Demonstrated project management experience, including budgeting and setting timelines.
- Stays current with rapidly changing technology and applies it to business needs.
- Must be able to effectively communicate technical information to both technical and non-technical personnel
- CCNA certification preferred.
Organizational Relationships
- Reports to North America team lead
- Communicates with departmental and business unit personnel throughout the organization to facilitate planning and implementation of technology services.
- May act in a lead capacity on small to mid-sized projects, but has no direct supervisory responsibility.
- Works effectively as part of a project team.
- Interacts with other colleagues at all levels in the conduct of day-to-day activities.
External Relationships
- May be required to interact with external customers in a Technical Services role to help determine most efficient architecture solution.
- Developing relationships with professional organizations, peer groups and industry trade groups; participates in industry forums and user groups.
