I directed a school-based agency designed to reduce barriers to education for elementary school students and families. I was responsible for all center activities, including: writing and administering successful grants; developing and tracking a budget; aligning center activities and projects with required state guidelines; identifying resources, such as clothes and medical supplies, in the community to meet the needs of Kingston families; conducting a record-setting food drive for Thanksgiving and collecting Christmas presents for over 140 children; encouraging social support linkages and networks among families; working with school staff and faculty to provide additional educational activities, such as career fairs; and generally promoting parent involvement in school activities.

I provided support and coordination for all programs at Forward in the Fifth. Duties included: assisting with strategic planning and development; writing for and proofreading the monthly newsletter, Fast Forward; planning and coordinating conferences and events; organizing and facilitating meetings; developing and presenting curricula; coordinating School-to-Work activities in our region; and engaging parents, educators, students and community members around the issue of education.

Kentucky Natural Lands Trust’s
Campaign to Preserve Blanton Forest
Berea, Kentucky
1999-2001
I implemented a successful campaign strategy to raise $2.5 million to purchase and permanently preserve Blanton Forest, Kentucky’s largest old-growth forest. I worked directly with the Kentucky Natural Lands Trust Board of Directors, the Kentucky Department of Natural Resources, the Kentucky State Nature Preserves Commission, a community-based steering committee, foundations, individual donors, educators, land stewards and other stakeholders to secure funding for land purchase and an endowment for the protection and preservation of several thousand acres of old-growth forest. My contributions included: leading fundraising and educational hikes; submitting grants to foundations; developing and maintaining a large donor database; working with local educators and students in promotion of environmental education; managing a large direct-mail campaign; planning and coordinating fundraising events; and representing the campaign at every opportunity, including several television spots. In addition to managing the campaign, I also administered and managed all aspects of the land trust.

I assisted in the administration and management of several national and state-wide sustainable agriculture and community projects. My experiences included: managing a small land trust; organizing several local, national and international conferences and tours, many for a “learning communities” project that afforded grassroots leaders in the sustainable agriculture movement to develop cutting edge collaborative projects; conducting a formative evaluation of a sustainable communities project; providing public relations and support for all projects; editing and desktop-publishing the program curricula; creating and managing databases and a web page; managing an office and all related equipment and operations; hiring and supervising administrative staff; and managing the organization’s books.

I assisted in the development and management of a program funded by the United States Department of Education, designed to deliver life skills curricula via satellite to inmates in correctional facilities in Kentucky.
