Work Related Experience
Knoxville Christian Youth Bands
This instrumental music program began in 1994 as an outlet for music education to all of the homeschool students in East Tennessee. My experience with the program began when searching for an ensemble for my 3 sons. Each of which have participated in this program with my youngest son still participating.
Currently the program offers a full range of ensembles including beginning, intermediate, and advanced concert bands along with a full jazz ensemble and brass quintet. There are currently 60 students participating. The organization is a 503c, non-profit organization with a full board of directors. Staff members consist of three. Two of which are degreed in music education, and one professional instrumentalist.
Active in our community, this organization has three formal performances, one solo and ensemble performance, and is actively involved in the East Tennessee Band/Orchestra Association allowing these students to perform in regional solo and ensemble activities along with band festival participation.
In keeping with the highest levels of expected music education, it is a Board policy that each student must take private lessons to participate. As might be expected, there is a very high level of music excellence with the Advanced Band receiving Superior Ratings in each festival performance.
My duties include Director of the Beginning and Advanced bands. Other duties include recruiting, marketing, student retention, and student teacher mentoring. Additionally, I successfully organized a statewide Honors Band in Nashville, TN, that included exceptional student musicians throughout the state for a 3 day honors band experience. Well attended, this was a successful time of music education, with an expectation of excellence.
Bearden Middle School Knoxville, TN
Acting in a temporary position, my job duties included instructing band students in grades 6-8 and assisting at the related high school with their marching band and concert band programs.
Erwin High and Middle School Asheville, NC
With a position lasting 2 years, I was responsible for the band program, grades 6-12. Instructing students with no band experience and all associated duties with the high school band program, excellence was a consistent emphasis. Special attention was given to introduce these students to a core curriculum of wind band repertoire generally accepted by collegiate music education faculty. Additional care was given to appropriate beginning student pedagogy, classroom time management, organizational logistics, student retention and self-discipline.
Ohio State University Marching BandColumbus, Ohio
Graduate Assistant
A highly coveted position, my duties included the following:
Marching band instruction: Indoor music and outdoor marching
Drill Design
Sectionals
Logistics associated with away game rehearsing and travel
Directorship of Pep Bands
Active performance directing of formal sit-down marching band concerts
Assisted in Marching Band Techniques classes, beginning conducting classes, and adjudication opportunities made available through the music department
Liberty High School Sykesville, MD
With a program in desperate need of restoration, I began the hard work of implementing policies and procedures to reinvigorate this band program that was viewed as filled with promise. Duties include concert band, marching band, and jazz band. A total philosophical change was needed that included standards of music excellence, student recruiting and retention, acceptable behaviors of discipline, practice requirements, and attitudes. Within three years, this band program flourished to championship status with an emphasis on a solid concert band foundation. With Superior ratings both on and off the football field, the Liberty High School Band program was recognized as one of the premier band programs in Maryland. Other program accomplishments:
New uniform and instrument purchases
Establishment of the Extravaganza marching band competition
Indoor Winter Guard program
Revitalized middle school recruitment performances.
Exceptional student leadership
A vibrant, high-profile school band booster organization
Mars Middle School Mars, PA
This was my first teaching position upon undergraduate graduation. Duties included teaching the middle school concert band, and beginning 6th grade students.
Overview
I have across-the-board experience in the development and sustainability of a quality wind band organization. With the added benefit of a sales and business background, and especially having raised three sons, I believe I can bring a passion and music excellence to nearly any band setting.
